Prof Holger Friedrch

Professor Friedrich obtained his PhD at the University of Cape Town in organometallic chemistry. He then took up an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, before joining the University of Natal, Durban in 1994. He is a past president of the Catalysis Society of South Africa (CATSA) and currently heads the Catalysis Research Group, which carries out both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis research.

Research Areas:

Catalysis – Heterogeneous and homogeneous. We mainly work on partial and preferential oxidation, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation (incl. CO2 assisted), cross-coupling reactions and bio-resource catalysis, green catalysis and CO2 to fuels catalysis. His research group has a very strong interest in the synthesis of materials and new materials by new and innovative routes. They are also active in medicinal chemistry, where the biological activities of metal complexes are investigated.
