Mr Ajay Bissessur

Lecturer

Mr Bissessur completed his BSc Honours and MSc at University of Durban-Westville now University of KwaZulu-Natal. He was appointed Lecturer in Chemistry and has 20 years lecturing experience in Analytical, Electroanalytical, Inorganic, Industrial and Applied Chemistry.

He has served as Chairman of the South African Scientific Committee of the International Junior Science Olympiad in 2011. He was a Head-Mentor, Examiner and Board Member of the International Chemistry Olympiad (ICHO) Committee and International Junior Science Olympiad Committee. In addition he served on the Board Member of SAASTA – Science Engineering Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI) Commitee – Department of Science and Technology.

Research interests

  • Production and characterisation of biodiesel using magnetic-impulse high frequency cavitation.
  • Analysis of insulating oils and materials for high and low voltage transformers.
  • Investigation into the corrosion of powerlines.
  • Use of hydrotalcites as stabilisers in processed PVC products.
  • Cellulose chemistry research.
  • Extraction of natural turmerone antioxidants

  • Acid mine drainage
  • Degradation of waste oils using microbial enzymes
