Prof Matthews studied in Durban at the University of Natal, followed by a PhD at Cambridge University and postdoc in Paris. He returned to South Africa in 1994, for one year at the Pietermaritzburg campus before being appointed as Lecturer in Physics at the Howard College campus. He was Head of School of Physics (2010-2011) and Academic Leader of Physics (2013-2014), and have served on Senate, the Institutional Forum, University Rules Committee, University Naming Committee, University Scholarships Committee and the University Language Board.
