Dr Govender was employed as a Research Assistant, thereafter as a Laboratory Technician and then as an Associate Lecturer at UDW. She is presently a Lecturer at UKZN. Her present research focus area is on medicinal chemistry (organic synthesis). This entails the synthesis of heterocylic compounds, quinoline in particular and their derivatives as a way of increasing drug discovery portfolios.

She is also interested in the fields of analytical chemistry, in particular, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and forensic chemistry.
